Love and Camp

When I tell people I met my husband at camp, they usually assume we grew up together as campers.  In fact, we were both in our twenties and were spending our summers at a small camp on Cape Cod.  I had just completed graduate school and was returning to work at a camp for my third summer as a counselor.  Eric had started his dream job as a year-round Assistant Director. Although it’s a total cliché, it was really love at first sight.  As they say, the rest is history!

There is something about working at camp that seems to help partners find their matches.  We’ve been directing our summer camp for 10 years and in that short time period, 9 couples have met at our camp and gotten engaged. 7 of those marriages are in the books and so far 3 babies have been born of those unions!  People often ask us what it is about our community that is so conducive to bringing partners together.  First and foremost, when you decide to spend your summer working at a camp with children, you are a special person.  You are kind, compassionate and fun-loving.  You are dedicated, passionate and patient.  So, being at camp is an easy way to find like-minded friends and romantic connections!  Camp is also like a bubble; at a residential camp like ours, your life as a staff member is all-encompassing (in a great way) and enables you to connect with your co-workers in a unique way. Time seems to move differently at camp. By the end of the summer, staff members often feel as though they’ve known each other for years rather than months.

Whether or not you find the partner of your dreams, camp is a wonderful place to make deep and lasting friendships.  It’s a chance for you to step out of your comfort zone and be in a totally new place with a group of people who share your goals.  Camp brings people together from different backgrounds and allows them to get to learn from one another – to gain new perspectives.  And … if you happen to find love along the way, well, that’s just the icing on the (wedding) cake!
